He Stands Alone
When a wrestler walks onto the mat, he stands alone. No one will run interference, no one will pass him the ball when they are under the net. Noone will catch a deep fly ball if he threw that slow change-up high and outside. The wrestler stands alone.
In Other sports where individual scores are kept, the contest is determined in time, distance and height. In wrestling the score is kept on a grappler's ability to overcome an opponent in a hand-to-hand contest where any second, at any time, can mean a loss or a win. If an opponent gains an advantage, there willbe no help, no substitutes; there will not be a time out and all can be lost in a second. Yes, the wrestler stands alone.
From the spectators standpoint, attention is focused on two competitors; not from 100 yards away, as in some sports, but, in most bouts, just a few feet away. Every move can be seen, every act detected. A failure in endurance, in technique or a lapse or concentration will be spotlighted. There is no place on the wrestling team for the lazy, the showoff, the half-hearted or the poor sportsman. When the whistle blows, wrestlers put their ability, determination and courage on the mat.
We who are close to the young grapplers have watched the full range of emotions, from elation to heartbreak. We have seen coaches with tears running down their cheeks as they try to console a young competitor who has given his ultimate effort...yet lost.
Wrestling is a tough, hard sport and like life, it is survival of the fittest. The athletes that enters and stay with the wrestling know this. The wrestler knows that when his match comes, he shakes his opponent's hand and the wistle blows...
He Stands Alone.
A Wrestler's Biggest Fan
Thats My little boy, Mat Two He's on deck hes the one who tries to look so confident While I sit here a wreck
I sit watch nervously biting my nails and shaking in my seat Praying for a victory and not a quick defeat
Please don't let him be hurt Please let him be all right After all this os why he practices so hard Almost every night
I'll just suffer through it and give him my support Wondering why sometimes, he ever chose this sport But when its finally over and he makes it throught "the three" Nothing can beat that look on his face That Look of VICTORY!
The look that says "I did it, hey mom did you see?" And when the ref holds up his hand I know why he chose this sport
And when the victory goes the other way I still give him my support There's always a next time as long as you try A mom never fails to say You're always a champion in my eyes son, and you'll always be that way
A mom is a wrestler's biggest fan Cause she knows what's in his heart She knows his dedication and how he tries so hard
Its hard for a mom to sit and watch As he son gets pinned And its hard not to get emotional as you watch your baby win Seeing his eyes search for you while you're sitting in the stands Making sure you saw every move turn out just the way he planned Becuase Every wrestler knows That His mom is his biggest fan!
I thought these were the two best poems I have ever read. Wrestling is one of the best sports ever. I love watching and I know my brother loves doing it and my mom loves watching it too. Both of those poems were true cuz all of the wrestlers know.. they do stand alone and all the moms know..there are the wrestlers Biggest Fans.
